Bronx Artist Collective ...

On Mar 18, the Bronx Artists Collective presented their first Artist Exhibit and Showcase at the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, featuring emerging and established artists from every creative discipline: visual arts, painting, sculpture, photography, video, music and drama, fashion, poetry, digital and intermedia. The Bronx Artists Collective is a brand new gathering of talented artists which originated in the North West Bronx neighborhoods around the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC).

Some participants have found national and international success with their work, and others are just garnering attention and building their careers and platforms. Artists of note in this neighborhood include: Ali Irizarry, graphic designer and MFA candidate at Lehman College; Fish Vargas, founding member of Acentos Bronx Poetry Showcase based in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, and member of the louderARTS Project; David Caraballo, digital and studio artist; Shirley Dimps, fashion designer; author, Anne Leighton; guitarist and visual artist Ray Del Valle; visual artist and educator, Michelle Ramsey; Ira Merritt, printmaker and three time BRIO winner; Sage Logan, clown and freelance musician; Leona Hull, choreographer; Josh Millis, painter, educator; social artist Ben Stock of Brainpower, Inc.; and many, many more creative people.

The Bronx Artists Collective (BAC) began as the dream of Carlos Laboy (children's theater director/producer and drama/puppetry instructor at MMCC). Jackie Davis (musician, arts educator, and community organizer affiliated with Hunter College School of Social Work) then joined Mr. Laboy in 2005 to help organize this group. The artists gathering at BAC have long-ranging plans to help each other develop in their media, build skills, inspire creativity, grow their art businesses, and to support the local creative economy. The Bronx Artists Collective extends a warm welcome to all creative people from the local community, and all who love the arts, beautiful things, new ideas and experiences, and--of course--creative people. As we move further along in our work and prepare for our first artists' event, we also want for people to join us to speack and dicuss issues you feel strongest about-- make sure you come to the workgroup meeting about a subject you care about!
